LA GRANDE, Ore. (EOU) - The forthcoming issue of Eastern Oregon University's literary publication Basalt is a memorial to a colleague and friend of many, Kathelene Galloway.
Galloway passed away suddenly in December 2009. She was an associate professor of art at EOU and the next edition of the magazine is a tribute to her legacy.
"This is a very special opportunity to gain a permanent remembrance of Kat Galloway that will contain precious art reproductions and commemorations," said Marilyn Levine, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at EOU.
Basalt editors Jodi Varon and David Axelrod assembled an intimate look at the important work Galloway completed after her first stroke, when she realized her eyesight was failing, and the provocative drawing she was working on when she passed away.
The issue will feature a memoir about Galloway's student days by her university art teacher, Cheryl K. Shurtleff, a critical essay by Ben Mitchell, the art editor of Basalt, Galloway's own artist statement about her important bodies of work and a chronology of her life.
A portfolio of many of Galloway's bold and vigorous drawings, a color selection from her Belted Galloways series, and a photo essay by Mona Dinger of Galloway's studio as she left it at the time of her death, is also included.
"This will be a very beautiful and lasting tribute to our late and highly esteemed friend, colleague and fellow community member," Axelrod said.
Pre-purchase copies are available for $10 or $15 after publication. Basalt is also accepting donations to defray the cost of reproducing the portfolio tribute in color. Make checks payable to Basalt and mail to College of Arts and Sciences, One University Blvd., La Grande, Ore., 97850.
The EOU Foundation is also a sponsor of Basalt. For more information call 541-962-3633 or e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org.
